The World of Woodturner's "family" site was created by
Herman de Vries of Winnipeg, Canada, in 2001 for wood
turners and those that appreciate woodturned art. It is a
safe place where turners can gather to post their work in
their own album and benefit from the experience and
skills of other woodturners.

Anyone can join, and there is no fee. Anonymity is NOT an
option, so send your request to the administrator (link below).

Wally Dickerman, a youngster born in 1921, is one of the
masters of modern woodturned art.   He is the artist who
created the piece shown here.

Wally is one of the early members of WoW, and his
passion for the art form is evident in the hundreds of pieces
in his   album and in the wide variety of turned pieces he
produces.

Wally began his turning career around 75 years ago,
in high school shop, and now his elegant and artistic touch
with a turned form is unequaled.

Wally recently said, “I enjoy sharing my knowledge in wood
turning gained from my years of experience. Over the years
I’ve taught nearly 500 turners and done demonstrations
at various clubs on the West coast, and at symposiums at
Provo and the AAW. I now limit my demos to our local club.

When asked what he enjoyed the most about turning, Wally
said, “I like the way turning lets me just get immersed in
what I’m doing. All other thoughts, good or bad just fall
away. I can mount a piece of wood on the lathe and make
something useful or just pleasing to see and hold. The fact
is, I’ve always been fascinated by beautifully figured or
colored wood. The lathe allows me to explore what’s
inside that wood.

Then this intriguing man says, “After hundreds of bowls and
vessels, I’m experimenting with various way to enhance my
work. Lately I’ve done quite a lot of pyrography on my
turnings. I have a dental drill and am experimenting with
piercing. There are many ways to texture wood and I’m just
getting started in exploring that. I have done a bit of
carving on my turnings, and plan to do a lot more. There
is really no limit on what can be done to embellish your
turnings.

Wally Dickerman, a true master of woodturning, still excited
by what he can learn after 85 years. This wonderful and
inspirational artist is the kind of person that has helped to
make the World of Woodturners a key woodturning site.
