Granny revisited

Bruce Hodgson is a Victoria, British Columbia artist working mostly with local woods, like big leaf maple, Garry oak, arbutus and cherry. He enjoys the entire process involved in woodturning, from gathering wood and rough shaping it with a chainsaw, to turning and refining the shape on the lathe. All pieces are sanded to a very fine finish, then oiled and buffed to accentuate the beauty of the wood’s natural figure. He specially in large woodturned salad bowls, and natural edged bowls. The past two years, he has been concentrating on large ‘wall sculptures’, incorporating various types of texturing, carving and colour to create dramatic structures to adorn the home. He has taken workshops with two English turners on large wall features, and given one presentation himself to the Victoria Woodturning Guild. He has been making a series featuring the plight of the killer whale in the Salish Sea, and also the decline of the Chinook Salmon, which is causing food shortages for the Orcas (killer whales). Several other recent creations show carved ammonite fossils.
